Every iron casting that leaves a foundry has first been through a gauntlet of grinding, cutting, and finishing work that most buyers never see. Gates and risers, the solid metal channels and reservoirs that feed molten metal into the mold, must be severed cleanly from the part. Flash and parting-line seams left by the mold must be ground flush. Sand inclusions, blemishes, and surface faults must be removed before any casting can be measured, inspected, or shipped. This collection of tasks, performed in what the industry calls the “cleaning room,” is deceptively expensive. Post-processing can account for up to 45% of the total manufacturing cost of an iron casting. There is a human toll as well: iron foundry workers have 182.2 incidents per 10,000 workers, among the highest in all manufacturing. The clean-up tools and material selection play a pertinent role.
