The Foundry Advantage of No-Bake Systems

If your foundry is exploring chemically bonded molding options, the decision often comes down to three things: casting quality, foundry environment, and total cost of ownership. As a proud distributor for HA International, Carpenter Brothers Inc. works with foundries every day to help them choose the right no-bake binder systems for their metal, their production volume, and their environmental goals.

No-Bake: Precision Built In

No-bake binder systems use a liquid resin and catalyst that chemically cure at room temperature — no heat, no compaction equipment required. The result is a rigid mold with high green strength (over 200 psi), allowing flask removal and pouring without a jacket. Because the sand mass cures uniformly and holds its shape precisely, no-bake castings consistently achieve excellent dimensional accuracy and surface finish.

No-bake stands on its own in precision, repeatability, and the ability to hold tight tolerances on complex geometries, inside and out.  Precision reduces machining stock, grinding, and downstream finishing costs.

Benefits to the Foundry

No-bake systems give foundries flexibility unmatched by traditional molding methods:

  • Reclaimable sand. All sand using HA’s No-Bake systems can be reclaimed and reused, reducing raw material costs and landfill volume.
  • Adjustable work and strip times. Catalyst selection lets foundries dial-in exactly how fast a mold sets, which is critical for matching production pace to pattern turnaround.
  • Fine detail reproduction. Because no-bake binders coat sand grains with a thin, uniform resin film rather than relying on compaction, they excel at capturing intricate cores, thin sections, and complex internal geometry.
  • Reduced defects. No-bake sand can reduce or eliminate casting defects caused by gas and expansion issues.

Green Benefits: Cleaner Air, Cleaner Shop Floor

Environmental performance is where HA International’s newer chemistries really shine. Today’s no-bake systems are engineered for minimal smoke and odor, providing the cleanest foundry environment. That means lower VOC and HAP emissions during pouring, cooling, and shakeout.  Your workforce will notice the improvement, and it’s easier to meet regulatory compliance.

Carpenter Brothers’ No-Bake Product Lineup

Pentex — A polyol-based no-bake binder systems purpose-built for aluminum and other non-ferrous castings. The Pentex L P151 P1 (polyol) and P252 P2 (isocyanate) pairing, catalyzed with Pentex P3500 series, delivers good tensile and hot strength with no reportable formaldehyde.

Techniset — The economical, proven phenolic urethane no-bake (PUNB) workhorse. It’s effective and affordable but produces more smoke and odor than newer chemistries.

BioSet OpTa 80 & 85 — A low smoke/odor evolution of Techniset. OpTa80 (Part 1) and OpTa85 (Part 2) use a non-hazardous, silica-based solvent that substantially reduces odor, smoke, and pollutant emissions while exceeding Techniset’s performance.

BioSet T8000 & T8500 — HA’s premium PUNB system, delivering the lowest smoke and odor in the lineup. It meets HAI’s EcoMission Standards, meeting or exceeding criteria like low VOC, low HAP, low odor, and use of renewable/recycled components.

Money-Saving Tip: Pair a BioSet Part 1 with a Techniset Part 2. The Part 3 catalyst governs work and strip times regardless of the pairing and so you get meaningfully reduced smoke and odor at a lower blended cost than a full high-end system.

Alphaset — A hybrid ester-cured phenolic no-bake system offering low odor at mixing, excellent pattern release, and a full range of cure speeds. Alphacure hardeners span from 3 minutes to 60 minutes, with Alphacure 105 typically landing in the 5–6 minute cure window.  This is a 2-part system that also delivers reduced expansion defects and strong shakeout performance, which is especially valuable for steel castings.  Binder related gas defects, common to steel castings, are markedly reduced or eliminated; the system contains low nitrogen, no phosphorous and no sulfur, all of which may impart gas defects. Most often, iron oxide addition can be eliminated.

Airkure 241 — HA’s furan no-bake resin is low water, low nitrogen, low formaldehyde, and has exceptional sand reclaimability. Overall, it remains a solid, classic option for foundries running the full range of casting types.
