Carbon

Carbon is used to raise the carbon level in your melt. You want a carbon that will go into solution fairly quickly without generating a lot of slags. Premium carbon raisers tend to be purer and have lower ash, sulfur, and nitrogen content. The economical carbon raisers will tend to be less pure and have higher ash, sulfur, and nitrogen levels. Like most things, you will need a good balance of ash, sulfur, and nitrogen specific to your melting needs.
